What can a 17-digit VIN tell you?
A Vehicle Identification Number can reveal the manufacturer, model year, vehicle type and technical specifications recorded for the vehicle. Find the VIN on the dashboard, driver-side door frame, title, insurance card or registration.
This free US VIN decoder uses official NHTSA vPIC data. Coverage is intended for vehicles manufactured for sale in, or imported into, the United States. European-market VINs can return incomplete results.
Before buying a used car, compare the decoded make, model, year and engine with the listing and title. A mismatch is a warning signal that should be explained before payment or signing.
US VIN DECODER FAQ
Questions before you decode.
Is this VIN decoder really free?
Yes. The vehicle identification result and model-level recall search do not require an account or payment.
Can it decode European VINs?
It may identify some European-built vehicles sold or imported into the United States, but European-only models can return limited or no specifications. A dedicated Europe decoder requires broader commercial vehicle data.
Does a VIN decode show accidents or mileage?
No. Decoding identifies the vehicle. Accident history, mileage records, ownership, title brands, theft, salvage and auction records require a vehicle history report.
Does a recall result mean my exact VIN has an open recall?
No. This tool displays campaigns associated with the decoded year, make and model. Confirm VIN-specific eligibility and repair status with NHTSA or an authorized dealer.
